For Now, Rely on the Tried and True. Recently Amazon announced that it ‘killed’ a project intended to improve its recruitment and selection processes by creating a technology-based AI Recruitment System. Unfortunately, the system discriminated against women.
As the world marches towards a future with machine learning and AI we need to be aware that these systems are created by individuals and often they carry societal biases and discriminate against protected classes. Even when Amazon realized the system was discriminating, it could not modify the system to the point of eliminating the bias.
Amazon isn't the only corporate giant to experience algorithmic bias. According to Fortune.com, Facebook is currently testing a new tool called 'Fairness Flow' in hope of discovering discriminatory biases in machine learning algorithms.
